Dick was born in Flint Michigan, the third child of Ida Mae Fritz Doyle and Thomas William Doyle. He graduated from The Ohio State University in Business Administration and studied at The University of Texas Graduate School of Business. Dick was a Commander in the United States Navy during WWII flying PBMs and PBYs. He remained an active pilot for many years flying his beloved Cessna 180 with his co-pilot in the air and for life, Grace. Dick loved to travel and discover. He was always eager to go on a trip, many times with no warning, but he also loved the detailed planning and arranging for many of his trips.
Dick was a warm, quiet, polite man of great faith who was supremely content with his life and family. He was a man of decency, modesty, integrity and responsibility. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting with his bird dog Annie, and fishing wherever he could. As a lifetime tennis player, Dick enjoyed his regular weekly games with his good friends at Westwood Country Club. He was a fine golfer and enjoyed the challenges of the Austin Country Club Golf Course and golf courses everywhere. He loved skiing and spent many fond years with his family in Aspen, Colorado skiing in the winter and fly fishing and hiking in the summer. He was an avid sports fan and loved all U.T. games. Dick and Grace were real estate developers and custom home builders. They owned the R.T. Doyle Company and built many homes in Austin and El Paso, including building the first home in Northwest Hills.
Dick is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Grace Odem Doyle. Grace and Dick were blessed with daughter Nancy Elizabeth Doyle, daughter Frances Doyle Grist and her husband Steve Grist, and daughter Patti Doyle Garrett and her husband David Garrett. Dick delighted in teaching his girls to love the things he did: tennis, golf, hunting, fishing, all U.T. baseball and football games, and especially, spontaneous travel. Dick's legacy will carry on through his six grandchildren of whom he was very proud and loved so much: Mason, Mary Wilson and Elizabeth Grist and Will, Meredith and Caroline Searight. Dick is also survived by his brothers Jack and Pat Doyle; Nancy's care providers Larri and Don Cook; his special friends Catherine and Clarke Heidrick and their family; and his many nieces and nephews.
