Mayo was born in Nacogdoches, Texas on May 10, 1914 to Richard and Mary Mayo. He loved tennis and was State Doubles Champion with Jack Taylor at Austin High School. He attended the University of Texas with his great friends Ben Powell and Jack Evans. When he heard on the radio that the lowlands had been invaded" he knew it was time to volunteer. He attended Officer's Candidate School in Florida where he was braced by Clark Gable. During WWII, he served in Caserata, Italy and Algiers, North Africa for three years. After the war, he returned to Austin to run his record shop, "King's Records" on Guadalupe. He then became a stockbroker at Rauscher Pierce and golfed with his favorite foursome, Gary Morrison, George Marsh and Allan Shivers. His strongest interests in later years were music and the University of Texas Football team. Mayo loved Austin. He was offered numerous jobs in Houston; however nothing would take him away from his beloved Austin. In fact, he insisted on being buried in Austin. Mayo's wit, humor and friendliness will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him. The family would like to extend special thanks to Guadalupe Pena for her care of Mayo in his last years.
