Richard (Rick) Schieffer Following a stroke, Richard (Rick) Schieffer passed away January 22, one day before his 69th birthday. Descendant of a venerable Texas family, he is survived by wife Pat Houlahan Schieffer, sons John and Michael, and sister, Jan Torline. A graduate of Austin High (1956), THE University of Texas (1960), and the University of Houston (1967), Rick served in the U.S. Army, was news director of KLRN (PBS station for San Antonio/Austin), and evening news anchor for the NBC affiliate in Tucson, Arizona where he and Pat lived for 33 years before returning to Austin. Remembered in Tucson for the popular Man in the Mall program on KTUC, he was also a business owner and member of the Screen Actors Guild. Continuing his familys tradition of championship greyhound breeding and racing, he was the announcer for Tucson Greyhound Park as well. Rick served on the board of the Friends of the Tucson Public Library and was president of the Exchange and Civitan Clubs. His daily morning walks were deepened by reciting the rosary, whereas his conversations were marked by witty but often dreadful puns. As a devoted father, he never missed his sons many baseball, football, and rugby games. An avid history buff, he was renowned for an enthusiastic support of his beloved Longhorns and a gregarious nature reflected in his engaging smile and ready handshake. A rosary will be held Friday, Feb. 2 at 7:30 PM followed by a Memorial Service/ Mass Saturday, Feb. 3 at 10:30 AM. Both events are at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church (1206 E 9th St). In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Stroke Association. Obituary and guestbook online at wcfish.com
