Ronald Wayne “Toby” Tobleman was born January 28, 1950 on Galveston Island to Connie and Bill Tobleman, the second of seven siblings. Toby graduated as salutatorian from LaMarque High School in 1968, and then attended the University of Texas at Austin as a Plan II Honors student. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1971 with a degree in mathematics, and completed an MBA from UT specializing in Actuarial Science in 1973. It was at UT that Toby met his future wife, Cary Lee Bauhof, and Cary and Toby were married at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin during Spring Break in 1971.
Toby’s professional life consisted of over fifty years as an actuary, first in the insurance industry at Great Southern Life in Houston, and later with consulting firms in Dallas and Austin. Toby joined Rudd and Wisdom Consulting Actuaries in December of 1976, where he continued working for over fifty years until his death. Toby benefited greatly from wonderful mentors and colleagues in his professional life, and was forever grateful for the opportunities and service he was able to perform as an actuary to governmental entities, foundations, professional associations, corporations, families, and individuals. Along the way, Toby acquired the professional designations of FSA, CFP, and CFA.
While Toby’s name was followed by many such initials, the initials of which he was most proud were GPT, Grandpa Toby. You didn’t have to know Toby long to know that his great love in life was his family and his many friends (having never met a stranger). Toby’s favorite activity was spending time with family and friends, whether it was playing music with siblings (and later children and grandchildren), backpacking in the western Rocky Mountains, participating in road races and weight lifting sessions with his fellow Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail and YMCA gym rats (where he was a fixture), or organizing work projects at his home in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Northern New Mexico.
Toby was always grateful for his many blessings on this earth, which are too numerous to list. Foremost was Toby’s awareness that despite being a sinner, he was saved by grace and a precious child of God. Cary and Toby have been members at All Saints Presbyterian Church (PCA) for the last twenty years, where Toby and Cary have been blessed with great friends, pastoral leadership, and care. Toby has spent many years serving as a deacon at All Saints, and has been richly blessed in that role as a servant.
Toby acknowledged that not all of us could be cancer survivors, but he was a cancer combatant. Toby and Cary and their family greatly appreciate all the prayers, support, and encouragement received along the way. Toby was promoted into his true and eternal home with Christ on April 28, 2026.
Toby is preceded in death by parents Connie and Bill Tobleman and brothers Dr. Bill Tobleman and Dennis Tobleman. He is survived by his lovely and patient wife of 55 years, Cary, children Heidi and Duke Cowden and Suzanne and Ross Tobleman of Austin, as well as grandchildren Marilee and Brett Hughes (Knoxville, TN), Clara Grace and Nick Haberly (Dripping Springs, TX), Abby Tobleman (Austin, TX), Coley Cowden (Annapolis, MD), Coulter Cowden (Annapolis, MD), William Tobleman (Pomona, CA), and Adelaide Cowden (Austin, TX). He is also survived by Christian and Inma de Serre de Saint Roman and family (Sevilla, Spain) and Tracy and Eric Posner (Portland, OR), siblings Mary Tobleman (Fort Worth, TX), Vicky Tobleman (Texas City, TX), Steve Tobleman (LaMarque, TX), Gail and Glenn Tobleman (Murphy, TX), Donna Martin (Benbrook, TX), and Cherylynn and Donald Tobleman (Dickinson, TX), as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Toby will be laid to rest in Lockhart City Cemetery at 10:30am on Monday, May 11. All Saints Presbyterian Church in Austin will host a memorial service and reception for family and friends on the same day at 4pm.
