
Rowena was a member of the Central Texas Classic Chevy Club with her 1957 Chevy. She was a great lady to talk with and we had many stories from her. Rowena would show up at meetings driving her 57 Chevy and I believe that it was her Grandson who came with her. Rowena came to a few outings we held on weekends with the car.  Years later when Rowena was no longer able to drive, the family contacted me and I purchased the 57 Chevy. We called the car "ROWENA". A few years later I had to sell the car for the construction of a shop and the sale of the car paid for my concrete floor of my shop. I often refer to the concrete slab as Rowena's floor.  She will be greatly missed and long remembered.



We met Mrs Looney our first night in Austin.  We gathered in the street(Lewis Lane) and watched a paint store on Medical Parkway burn.  As we chatted, I realized we had a unique neighbor.        Mrs. Looney was always kind and tolerant of us as neighbors.  Her driveway was directly out our back door, and our daughter spent countless hours riding her Big Wheel, making chalk art, etc right outside Mrs. Looney's living room.    It was a sight to see, back in the day, Mrs Looney go to town in the '57 Chevy.  The original owner, she was mighty proud of that vehicle.    Our family met Mrs. Looney when I attended pharmacy school.  When I graduated and we moved, we lost touch with our good neighbor.  I will remember Mrs. Looney as a straight-shooting, original Texas character.     John



My family  had an "unusual" relationship with Mrs. Looney, and we want to express our sadness at her death.    We knew Mrs. Looney for about 11 years, but did not (literally could not) get really close to her. The very thing that brought us into her life kept us apart. You see, my wife, Diana, and I were therapy pet pals, bringing our glorious tiny dogs into the lives of as many people as we could. Mix in Mrs. Looney's significant dog allergies and you now understand. Although my dogs were all designated hypoallergenic, she reacted if they were closer than about 12-15 fee for even a fairly duration. So our relationship developed at far more than arms length.    Mrs. Looney was living at Duval Oaks (now renamed "Loyalton") the day we made our very first official pet pal visit. When we rounded the corner, entering into the hall that now comprises the Special Care unit, we spotted her name by her door. My wife has an aunt named "Rowena", so we just had to knock and introduce ourselves. Mrs. Looney was very friendly, and apologized for her allergies. From that moment on, we always kept our distance. We backed off when we spotted her in the hall or common area. And she did spend a lot of time walking, so we saw her often. We still made sure we said "Hi." and welcomed her into conversation. She smiled and chatted, often briefly and always charmingly, as we passed by on opposite sides of the hall or area, and she assured us that we were maintaining a comfortable distance. I often waved our dogs' paws at or showed off their costumes to her, especially from the doorway to the dining room, which was not far from her table. On the rare occasions when I was at her residence sans dogs, I approached her for a closer, longer conversation.    I always wished we could have known each other better, but was glad we got to know her a little.  But if we could enjoy her from a distance, I can only imagine how much she meant to those who were close to her. She was there on out first pet visit and was the last of the original group to leave, 11 year and 6 puppies (April, Stutz, Happy Jack, MacGregor, Dino and Sarah). That is actually a significant collection of relationships. We do and will miss her.



My brother Harold just e-mailed me the obituary in the Austin paper.  My three brothers, Harold, Leslie, and John and I know how important your mother and her family were to our mother and father, Laura Lee and Bill Pieratt.  Mother told me how she loved to spend her youth at the Darter house and how she loved the Darter girls (of course, my brothers and I dearly loved Maud Ann as our aunt).  Your mother and father were best man and matron of honor for my parents who secretly married in Halletsville. And, strangely enough, just this weekend I was looking through old photos of my mother's, and there were pictures of the Darter house (which was huge, and I wish were still standing), of Rowena, and of Maud Ann, and maybe one of Margaret.  Our mother died in 1989, and your mother read the obit in the Austin paper and was one of the first to call and talk to me for a long time.  Mother always said the Darter girls were extremely smart, extremely talented, had fantastic personalities, were always fun, and unique among all the other girls. Our mother  dearly loved each one of the Darter girls.       We extend our sincere sympathy to your family, and we feel grateful for the friendship your mother Rowena and her sisters shared with our mother Laura Lee Wilson Pieratt.
