He is survived by his former wife Margaret McKeehan Smith, his 11-year companion, Georgie Hassler, two sisters Geneva Blair and Katherine McCoy, three brothers Jackie Ray Smith, Charles Richard Smith, and Franklin “Butch” Lake, five children Randall Ray Smith, Roylynn Smith, Ronald Wayne Smith, Russell Warren Smith, and Rona Margaret Smith who cared for him with grace and dignity in his final days, eight grandchildren, Austin Niel Smith, Sydney Elaine Smith, Aubrey Lyndon Smith, Megan Victoria Smith, Ashley Kay Smith, Kayley Jo Smith, Phillip Randall Humphreys, and Zoie Margaret Posas.
Roy attended St. Martins Lutheran Church as a boy growing up with his mother, Hilda Lake, who preceded him in death. He later in life joined the Baptist church where he took his children and was the youth director.
Roy was a graduate of Stephen F. Austin High where he sang bass in the mixed choir and played baseball as a left-handed pitcher. He played briefly in the minor league after high school. He was a salesman for several companies and worked as production manager for Tracor Inc.
Roy loved to racecars on round track and the faster the car, the better. He spent the later part of his life mentoring Naskart racers.
His battle with congestive heart failure was fought with the same intensity, courage, and pride that he displayed in life. He was always such a presence in a room. He is gone from our sight but not from our hearts.
