

Ruben F. Ortega Jr. (Pot) passed away at the age of 91, Friday, February 14, 2014, at his home in Highland Haven, Texas. He was born on December 15, 1922, in Austin, Texas, to Ruben Ortega Sr. and Deborah Flores Ortega, both of which preceded him in death.
He was also preceded in death by his brothers: Daniel Ortega, Samuel Ortega, Benjamin Ortega, and Abel Ortega; sisters: Deborah Garcia and Martha Vidaurri; and his son David Ortega.
Ruben attended the University of Texas before enlisting in the Navy. After being discharged, he went back to UT and played baseball for the Longhorn team. To this day, he still holds the record for most hits in a single game, at six. Ruben was a very Godly, honorable and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a retired job placement officer for the Texas Employment Commission and a WWII Navy Veteran. Earlier in his life, he was a minister for the Assembly of God church.
He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Lydia Resendez Ortega; sons, Benjamin Ortega, Ruben Ortega III, Paul Ortega and his wife, Donita; daughter, Rachel Ortiz and her husband, Nasario; his brother, Eliseo Ortega and his wife, Connie; and by his grandchildren, Sarah Henderson, Jacob Ortega, Allison Ortega, Bri Anne Ortega, Jada Ortega, Brooke Ortega, Daniella Ortega and Moriah Ortega.
Viewing to take place from 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Thursday, February 20, 2014, at Weed–Corley–Fish Funeral Home, 2620 S. Congress in Austin. Services will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. at the Funeral Home Chapel. A Military Graveside Service will be conducted at 10:45 a.m. Friday, February 21, 2014, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
