

Sam Houston Clinton passed away on Tuesday, October 5, 2004 in the company of family and friends. The son of the late Faye Ramsey and Samuel Houston Clinton, Sr., he was born and raised in Waco, Texas where he attended Baylor University and later Baylor Law School. After law school, Sam served as an assistant to Congressman W. R. Bob Poague in Washington, D.C. and worked as a fingerprint examiner for the FBI. He returned to Dallas to join the prestigious law firm of Mullinax and Wells. Later he moved to Austin, a city he dearly loved. He proudly served his country in WWII as a naval aviator, his state as a Judge on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, and his city as a member of the Historic Landmark Commission. As a Judge, he served 3 consecutive 6-year terms duly elected as a Democrat. He was a constitutional scholar and avid historian, happily officing in one historic building as a member of the law firm Clinton and Richards and happily living in the first building zoned historic in Austin. A noted trial attorney, Judge Clinton tried a number of high profile cases during his years in private practice. He was general counsel to the Texas AFL/CIO and the Texas Civil Liberties Union and a member of numerous committees serving the State Bar of Texas. He is survived by his beloved wife Hazel; children Lindsay of New York City, NY, Scot of Houston, TX, Sam of Mill Valley, CA, and Carol of Waldoboro, ME; grandchildren Sara and Evan of Waldoboro, ME; brother Ramsey and sister-in-law Emmy of Burnet; niece Claudia, nephews Cleve and Carcy, their spouses and families; many cousins and friends. The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Buckner Villas and in particular Mrs. Inez Smith for her devoted and loving care. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, October 8, 2004 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home with The Very Reverend Philip Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Texas State Cemetery.
