She is survived by her two sons Robert Locke Browning III and Stewart Redfearn Browning, Stewart’s wife Melissa Browning, their children Sophia and Owen Browning, her loving brother Joseph Upchurch, Joseph’s wife Alice Upchurch, and Joseph’s children Bryant and Brandon Upchurch.
Sarah grew up in Mullins, South Carolina, and Greenville, North Carolina, and after graduating from Rose High School she attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she earned a BS in Pharmacy. She was the salutatorian and served as the treasurer of her class. She enjoyed playing basketball, and was an accomplished, competitive archer, which she also taught.
In 1960 she and her ex-husband Robert Browning Jr. MD, traveled to Nigeria on a Smith-Kline-French fellowship focusing on contagious diseases, where she served as the pharmacist for a village. After a stay in Arkansas, she moved to Waikiki, Hawaii, and worked as a pharmacist while Robert was stationed there with the Navy.
From Waikiki, she moved to Oklahoma, and then to Richardson, Texas where they raised their sons, Rob and Stewart. They also established a ranch in Emory, Texas -- raising Angus and harvesting crops for many years.
She eventually moved back to Greenville, North Carolina, and then around 2005 relocated to Austin, Texas where Stewart lived and to which Rob returned.
Sarah will be laid to rest alongside her parents at Pinewood Mortuary in Greenville, North Carolina.
