With sadness in their hearts, yet with thankfulness for a joyful resurrection, older sister Beverly of Charlotte NC and younger brother James of Austin TX wish to share the passing of their beloved brother, Scott Merriman Elwell, on November 23, 2015. He was 65 years young! Scott was born to Harry Howard Elwell, Jr. and Betty Stayton Elwell on November 14, 1950 in Seagraves TX. He attended elementary schools in TX, KS, IL and FL, and junior and senior high school in Tallahassee FL. He was a 1968 graduate of Coronado High School in Lubbock TX, to where the family moved just prior to his senior year.
Scott married Beverly Herring in 1976 in Austin TX; then, became a proud and happy father to Nathaniel Thomas in 1977. Over time, life happened and Beverly and Scott divorced; he raised Nathan into adulthood. Love struck again, and Scott and Beverly joyfully remarried in 2006. Sadly, Nathan was diagnosed with melanoma the next year and after a courageous 2-year fight, died in 2009 in Lubbock TX, just days after his 30th birthday. Beverly followed him in death in 2011, also in Lubbock TX. Scott was a plumber during all those years, both in Austin and Lubbock.
As already mentioned, Scott is preceded in death by his son, his wife, and also his parents. After Beverly died, he moved back to Austin to be nearer his brother James. James became his best friend, who lovingly cared for him during his last years.
Scott's immediate and extended family, and friends, will remember him as an easy-going fellow, quick with a belly laugh, and full of compassion. He was a prolific reader and always enjoyed dialogues on just about any subject! Many will remember Scott as a gentle man, who valued respect and fairness. And, as stated by one of his friends, "a kinder soul, I've never met".
Beverly and James will miss their brother's presence, but will carry his spirit in their hearts forever. Per Scott's request, there will be no service. Instead, there will be a party to celebrate his life at a later time!
