Sheila was born on March 19, 1952, at Fairchild Airforce Base in Spokane, Washington. She was the 3rd of 6 children in a military family. The Turners moved frequently throughout her childhood solidifying a close bond between the brothers and sisters. She most enjoyed the years the family lived in Adana Turkey when her father was stationed at Incirlik Air Force Base. Sheila enjoyed playing sports, cheerleading and taking in the unique cultures of all the places they lived. When Sergeant Turner was stationed at Austin-Bergstrom AFB in 1968, the family permanently settled in Austin where Sheila graduated from John H. Reagan High School in 1970. She then went on to study at the University of Texas.
Sheila spent many years working as a legal secretary with her brother Joe at his Law Office where she would often bring her visiting niece Rebekah to work with her in the summers. She then transitioned to nannying for the Richardson family, whose boys Bocar, Brandon and Miles whom she loved dearly. She eventually retired as the school secretary at St. Austin’s school where Joe’s kids Jacob, Jeena, Jackson and Joseph were students. She loved supporting all her nieces and nephews in their endeavors – spending decades cheering them on in Irish Dance competitions, sports games, concert performances and more.
Sheila spent her free time volunteering as a girl scout leader at Dottie Jordan Recreation Center. Not one for crafts, she took her troop to museums, plays, the nutcracker and the Johnson Space Center. This love for history and culture extended to most of her hobbies and her impeccable taste in purses and accessories. She loved to travel with friends and family, showcase her endless knowledge of the Civil War, had an extensive home library, and was hoping to visit the new Obama Presidential Center this year. The World’s Best Aunt - she never forgot to send a birthday card with a cool $20 inside, she loved taking the kids to water parks, theme parks, and every historical site in Texas followed by the occasional trip to Luby’s for lunch. She loved to go to movies, or go bowling, she gave excellent hugs, was generous with the “I love you’s” and reveled in spirited conversations about politics, the 1990’s Phoenix Suns and everything in between. She will be missed dearly by everyone who loved her.
Sheila was a dedicated daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin and friend. She is preceded in death by her parents Rush Truett Turner and Margaret Sullivan Turner; her nephew and god son Jacob Andrew Turner and Bocar Richardson whom she helped raise and loved as her own.
