Steve was born January 12, 1945 to Mary Howard Smith and Rex Beach Smith and was the oldest of his three siblings, Linda James (deceased), Larry Smith and Clay Smith. Steve is survived by his daughter Rachel Smith Woodard, son-in-law Mark, their children Greene and Grace, son Rayner Hale Smith, daughter-in-law Tanya, their daughters Gillian and Sienna, Steve’s partner Beverly Beauchamp, and his brothers Larry and Clay Smith and their families.
Steve attended the University of Texas in Austin before beginning his entrepreneurial career that led him through both economic lows and successful highs that few people on this earth get to experience. From selling chili ristras on the side of Texas Highway 71 in the 80's to co-founding Excel Telecommunications in the 90's to transforming a West Texas town of Lajitas into a first class resort in the 2000's, there was no end to the dreams and fortitude of this great man.
He was passionate about helping people and touched more lives than one could count. His entrepreneurial spirit and ongoing work ethic inspired him to genuinely want to see others do well and find success in their own lives. His love for life was contagious and he set an example about what it meant to live life to the fullest. Those survived by him will remember the joy brought by his indomitable spirit as well as his kindness and warmth. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
As per Steve’s request, a celebration of life will be held in the late summer to early fall.
