Steve was born on October 21, 1945, in Carmel, California, to John F. and Mary Ann Van Dyck. His father was a US Army officer, and Steve spent his early years in California, Italy, and Germany, before moving with his family to Austin in 1957. He graduated from McCallum High School and spent two years of military service at Fort Knox, Kentucky, before returning to Austin and attending the University of Texas. He then had a long career with the Internal Revenue Service district office in Austin.
Steve was very involved with Austin's adult softball league program, as both player and manager, and carried his teams to several championships. He managed The Legendary Texas Bluesmen for 20 years, and the team still thrives today, under the expert leadership of Mike Hunt. Steve was also a railroad buff, and enjoyed traveling by train throughout the United States. He took particular interest in photographing railroad stations in the small towns of Texas and the Midwest, and created a significant photo archive of these vanishing buildings. Steve's extensive collection of railroad artifacts is now lovingly held by his cousin Candace Bawcombe Schast, of Arlington.
Steve is survived by his three siblings and their spouses: John and Carolyn Van Dyck of Silver Spring, MD, Victory and Theodore Chase of Princeton, NJ, and Craig and Caron Van Dyck of South Orange, NJ. He was the beloved "Unca Steve" to their children and grandchildren. He is also survived by many cousins in Illinois, California, and Texas.
Funeral service and burial at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio will be private.
The family requests that any memorial donations be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
