

Sue McCarty Lane died Tuesday, February 27, 2007 in Austin, Texas. She was born in Amarillo, Texas on September 26, 1932. Her family moved to Corpus Christi when she was a young girl. She was the daughter of Oswin McCarty and Martha Jackson McCarty, both of Oklahoma. On her mothers side, Sues great-great grandmother was a Cherokee who was married to a Texas Ranger, Jack Kincaid. Sue was extremely proud of her Cherokee heritage all of her life. Sue graduated from Corpus Christi Ray High School and The University of Texas at Austin with a B.S. in Elementary Education. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority where she was pledge trainer. Sue was in the Tyler Rose Festival, Corpus Christi Buccaneer Days, and was presented as a Corpus Christi debutante in 1951. Sue was an elementary school teacher in Austin where she met Joe Callaway Lane, Jr. They were married on December 22, 1953 after a courtship of six weeks and a proposal at the Texas-OU game in October. Their daughter, Martha was born in 1954. Another daughter, Laura, was born in 1961. Joe passed away in 1987. Sue and Joe began their married life on South Padre Island where they were the first permanent residents. Sue taught first grade in Port Isabel. Sue also taught in El Paso at St. Clements Episcopal in the 1970s and taught at Pease Elementary in Austin until retirement. Sue was a member of The Junior League of Austin. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd and served as directress of the Altar Guild for many years. Sue is survived by her daughter Martha Donnell and Rob Donnell and their children, Laura and Will, of Houston; daughter Laura and Brian DeVaney and their children, Louise and Matt, of San Antonio; and brother Oswin Patton (Pat) and Jean McCarty of San Antonio. Sue fought a brave and uncomplaining battle with cancer. Her family appreciates the love and devotion shown by her many friends. A memorial service will be held Friday, March 2nd at Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Windsor Rd. and Exposition Blvd. at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the charity of your choice.
