1924-2022
Sue Alexander Morrison, 97, passed away peacefully on June 5 at her home in Austin TX. Sue’s life centered on a deep religious faith and devotion to family and friends. She found joy in helping people in need as well as supporting organizations that foster educational opportunities and the arts.
She was born in Galveston on September 20, 1924, to Helen D. and Charles H. Alexander.
Sue was one of 10 Alexander children raised in Pearland TX, a then-rural area south of Houston. She graduated from Alvin High School where she was selected “Smile Queen.” She was known throughout her life for her warm and welcoming smile, infectious laugh, and positive attitude.
After attending The University of Texas at Austin, Sue married Walter J. Morrison, a lawyer who was resuming his career after service in WWII. They resided in Houston and were together 58 years until Walter’s death in 2006.
Sue is survived by son Mark and wife Ellen of Austin, daughters Marion Morrison of Louisville KY and Michele Morrison of Austin; grandchildren Jeff Morrison and wife Elizabeth of New Orleans LA, Scott Morrison and wife Meagan of Georgetown TX, Ross Roberts of Copenhagen, Denmark, and Margaret Roberts of Brooklyn NY; great-grandchildren Merritt and Emily Morrison of New Orleans, and Clover Morrison of Georgetown; and sister Patricia Alexander Wood of Waco TX.
She was a longtime member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston, where she served on the altar guild and participated in Bible study and prayer groups, and in recent years was a member of St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Austin. She belonged to The Daughters of the King, an Episcopal-Anglican women’s order that spreads Christianity and ministers to the poor, elderly, and homebound.
She was an active volunteer and generous giver, supporting organizations such as Community First, Camp Allen (Christian program for children), the Houston and Austin symphonies, and Holly Hall (a nonprofit faith-based senior living facility). For decades, she was known in her tennis group in Houston as an avid competitor.
A service celebrating Sue’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on June 11 at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 8724 Travis Hills Drive, Austin. A reception will follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests considering a gift to Community First in Austin, St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Austin, or a charity of personal choice.
