Susan Vernell Logan York, 76, of Austin, Texas, went to be with her heavenly Father on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born May 13, 1936 in Big Spring, Texas to Vernon Moody and Annell Bolling Logan.
Susan graduated from Lamesa High School in 1954 and Wayland Baptist College in 1958 with a Bachelor’s degree in Piano and Organ. She also studied at Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary. She married Bill Walter York in 1960 in Lamesa. Bill began as a Baptist minister and later became Director of the Commission for the Blind in Austin. She was organist at First Baptist Church in Austin for over 30 years, and loved playing the beautiful Casavant pipe organ. Susan taught piano in her home for many years and has collaborated with many other musicians as a pianist. She delighted in playing for the Sanctuary Choir, Cantamos, the children’s choirs and playing in the hand bell choir at First Baptist Church. Susan loved the family of First Baptist Church, it gave her great joy. She was so happy to be able to take a tour of Germany and magnificent pipe organs there.
In the 1970’s Susan was organist at Ft. Worth’s Travis Ave Baptist church.
Following her retirement from First Baptist Church, Susan continued to teach piano in her home and enjoyed meeting friends to exercise and swim at the YMCA.
From 1997 to 2003, Susan cared for her mother and father in her home with compassion, care, and love. Susan had the greatest gifts of gentleness and strength, a beautiful smile for everyone, a heart that would much rather give than receive. “There has never been an angel so dear as Susan.”
Susan is preceded in death by her loving husband of 20 years, Bill Walter York and her parents.
Susan is survived by her children, Scott Crawford York and Laurie Ann York; grandson, Logan Alexander William Buican who lovingly adored her “Nanna”; brother, Donald Moody Logan, PhD and sister, DeeAnn Logan Gorham; dear friend of over 60 years, Evelyn McCarty, DM; friends, Bob and Millie Downer; neighbor friends, Patsy and Ronnie Bucher and Bill and Jeanette Gaston and Sybi Ward whose weekly gifts of flowers brought a beautiful smile to Susan’s face.
The family wishes to thank Susan’s caregivers: Jillian Brady, Haydee Maldonado and Desi Bustos Garcia.
The family also wished to thank the staff at Stonebridge Health Center for their wonderful care. Odyssey Hospice of Austin cared for Susan in the last 10 days of her life in her home. The family wishes to thank especially Crystal, her nurse and beautiful woman of God.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 5, 2012 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Cook-Walden Forest Oaks Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, July 6, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at Cook-Walden Forest Oaks Memorial Park.
A Memorial/Celebration Service will be on July 15th at 2:00 p.m. and held at First Baptist Church of Austin, 901 Trinity St., Austin, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, Susan suggested that contributions might be made to Meals on Wheels, FBC of Austin, CurePSP or college fund for Logan Alexander Buican.
Susan’s angelic spirit will be greatly missed, but we find much comfort in knowing she is in the presence of our Lord… a place she so rightly deserves.
May her memory be eternal.
