Theodore "Ted" Henry Knippa, born on December 6, 1936, passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2015. Ted is preceded in death by his parents, Gustav and Clara (Moerbe) Knippa, as well as his older siblings, Bea, Aggie, George, Eddie, Lil and Bobby. He is survived by Janet, his devoted wife of 53 years, and daughters Renee (Martin) DeCamp and Rhonda Blanton. Grandchildren Lily Ann, David Theodore and Laura Kay will miss their Papa Teddy. Ted is also survived by his sister Jody Brown of Houston.
Ted was born in Loebau, Texas and baptized at Christ Lutheran Church on January 3, 1937 by the Reverend William Remmert. He was then confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Houston on March 18, 1951 by the Reverend Oliver Harms. His confirmation verse was John 14:6 “I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father but by me”. Ted married Janet Kay Swenson on June 23, 1962. They were wed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Austin, with the Reverend Ray Schkade officiating.
After serving in the U.S. Army, Ted joined his brothers at Austin Art Glass and then went on to a career in commercial aluminum sales. While working with his brothers, he installed the stained glass windows in Redeemer Lutheran's sanctuary and other local churches.
Ted was a faithful member of Redeemer Lutheran Church for 60 years where he sang in the Men's and Chancel Choir. Ted found solace in his Christian faith and took pride in his Wendish Lutheran heritage. He was a loyal husband, father, Uncle Teddy, and friend. We will remember Daddy for his love of family gatherings, guitar picking, horseshoe throwing, 42 playing, and all around good humor. We will miss him dearly. Many heartfelt thanks to those who lovingly cared for him. We love you!
Visitation will be from 6pm to 8pm on Friday, October 23rd at Cook Walden Funeral Home (6100 N. Lamar). Please come celebrate with us.
