Thomas David McGuffey, 59, died suddenly on Sunday, November 22, 2015, from a Pulmonary Embolism. He was born on October 20, 1956, at the Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, Texas to parents Mary Louise and George Thomas McGuffey.
Thomas was the eldest of four children. He was a loving and caring brother who enjoyed teasing his sisters. He grew up in Lake Highlands in Dallas, Texas. During his younger years he enjoyed caring for and riding his horse, which was stabled down the street from his house. He graduated from Lake Highlands High School in 1975, after pulling off a great senior prank with fellow classmates. He attended The University of Texas from 1975-1979, where was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Accounting and soon after earned the professional Certified Public Accountant license.
In January of 1982, Thomas married his college sweetheart, Sally Dunn McGuffey. They had two children, Kyle Steven McGuffey and Ann Elise McGuffey. He coached football for Kyle and soccer for Ann and Kyle when they were young. He loved attending every swim meet, soccer, football, basketball, volley ball game as well as every music and dance recital. He took his family on many trips to South Padre, snow skiing, California, Florida and Europe. The family loved boating on Lake Travis and Lake Austin. He enjoyed golfing with Kyle, playing with his dogs, reading, working in the yard and working out at the gym.
Thomas was a sports fan, with a special passion for University of Texas football. His father, also a UT graduate, introduced Tommy at a young age to the annual tradition of attending the TX-OU football game. They attended numerous games together over the years, and the tradition grew to include Sally and their children his sisters, husbands, as well as his niece and nephew. Thomas attended 49 consecutive TX-OU games, including this year’s very special game when UT handed OU their only loss of the season. The entire family has many happy memories of sharing this annual event with him as well as the annual family Christmas gatherings.
Thomas’ professional career includes working at Pete Marwick and Mitchell in Houston, a Big 8 Accounting Company, directly out of college. He returned to Austin to pursue his MBA at the University of Texas. He went through the Credit Training Program at First Republic Bank, (now known as Bank of America) and worked his way up the ladder to be a Commercial Lending Officer and Manager of the FDIC Work Out Loan Department. He left the bank to be a Manager for a Loan Security Company. He then retired and together with Sally, ran a home-based bookkeeping business. As an Actor, Thomas was an Extra in 25 movies and TV productions that were filmed in Austin.
Thomas is predeceased by his parents and his beloved daughter, Ann, who died on February 8, 2013. He will be interred alongside Ann at Oakwood Cemetery.
