

Tommie Jean "T J" Mayes, age 83, of Dripping Springs went to be with the Lord on June 3, 2013 after a brave battle with cancer. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 10:00 am at Dripping Springs United Methodist Church, 28900 Ranch Road 12, Dripping Springs, Texas with Pastor Scott Bradford officiating.
T J was born May 2, 1930 in Buda, Texas to Dennis C. Lane and Emma B. Lane. She lived her early years in the Buda, Austin area, but also spent part of her childhood in several other states as her family followed her father from job to job during the lean years of the depression. After attending Austin HS she moved back to Buda where she graduated in 1947. While there she fell in love with William Garrett Mayes, her husband of 48 years. They were married in 1949 and shortly after the birth of their first child in 1950, the family moved to Seguin, Texas where she worked for KWED radio and the County Tax Assessor Office. In 1965 the family returned to Austin where she worked for Mutual Savings and Loan, Lamar Savings and Loan, and National Western Life until she retired.
She is preceded in death by her husband William Garrett Mayes, son Daniel Charles Mayes, father Dennis Crosby Lane, mother Emma B Lane, and sister Gwyn Robbins.
She is survived by her son, Gary Mayes and wife Kathy; granddaughter, Kristin Phipps and husband Keith; and grandson, Jeff Mayes; great-grandchildren, Blake and Charleigh Phipps; nieces, Deborah Johns and Sandra Pelath; and nephews, Dennis C. Sweazea and wife Cathy, James L Sweazea and John W. Mayes and wife Nelda; along with numerous great nephews and great nieces.
She was a loving mother to her sons and she especially loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed following them in their school and non school events. She loved traveling, sewing, quilting, and gardening.
Our family would like to send a thank you to the staff of Hill Country Nursing Home in Dripping Springs, Dr. Peter Scholl, and Dr. Manuel Martin. A special thanks goes out to the loving care and attention from the staff at Hospice Austin, especially Patty Almond and Charlotte Sharrett.
