Veryl Drummond Johnson passed away peacefully on April 24th, 2006 after recently being diagnosed with cancer. His wife, children, and his faithful dog Binky were by his side. Although cancer took his body, it did not take his spirit. He continued to remain an inspiration to all who knew him even throughout his illness. He was born in Niagara Falls, NY on May 24th, 1933 to Ethelda Drummond, and Harry Veryl Johnson. He attended Niagara Falls High School and went on to Northwestern University in Evanston, ILL where he graduated with a degree in geology. He then pursued a career with Union Carbide Corporation where he remained until his retirement in 1989. Upon his retirement he and his wife Janet moved to Lakeway, TX where he quickly became an active member of the community. One of Veryl's first accomplishments was founding the Pop Warner Football league of Lake Travis. He devoted countless hours to the successful development of this league. Because of his love for youth and the sport, he was honored as the 2004 National Pop Warner Volunteer of the Year. In addition, a Pop Warner scholarship has been named in his honor which is presented to graduating seniors at Lake Travis High each year. He was also active in Little League Baseball where he umpired numerous games, ran the concession stand, and put many hours into the creation and successful development of the Lake Travis Field of Dreams sports complex. In 1995 he accepted a position at Lake Travis High School. His official title was parking lot patrol attendant, but he was so much more. He was involved with and attended almost every Lake Travis High event, whether it was involving sports, theater, or music. Veryl's only job was not at the high school. He was also an active member of Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church where he worked and worshiped. He used his God given abilities to build, fix, and serve the congregation in any way necessary for the past 10 years. He was preceded in death by his mother Ethelda Drummond Johnson and his father Harry Veryl Johnson. He is survived by his wife Janet of 48 years, his children Kenneth Johnson and wife Jeanne, Sarah Jupp and husband Terence, Stephen Johnson and wife Jenna, and Janel Delorefice and husband Todd. He had 9 grandchildren he adored. Also surviving is his sister Elaine Kirchner, his niece Nancy Kirchner, and his nephew Robert Kirchner. Veryl will be missed by so many who adored him. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Hospice Austin 4107 Spicewood Springs Rd. Ste 100 Austin, TX 78759.
