Yvonne White Streety was born on August 24th, 1926 in San Angelo, Texas. At birth, she weighed 2 pounds and was not expected to live. Two weeks later, she was adopted by Rolan and “Johnnie” Myrtle Williams White.
Yvonne grew up mostly in San Angelo and Crowell, Texas. Her uncle was a Baptist minister and she visited many churches with his family where they sang gospel music. On April 27th, 1942 Crowell was hit by an F4 tornado. At the time, Yvonne was 15 years old and she remembered seeing the electricity dance along the telephone wires outside her house. Soon after, the window glass blew out and Yvonne crawled under a dining room table. She didn’t remember much more, but when they found her and pulled her out, she had a couple of nails stuck in her thigh (and still had the scars to show it). The tornado destroyed her high school and she had to attend a neighboring school the following year.
Yvonne attended Decatur Baptist Junior College in Decatur, Texas (the first Junior College in the U.S.) and later, the University of Texas, where she met her husband, Henry Mack Streety, Jr. They married on November 26, 1953. Yvonne studied child development in college and started an in-home half day children’s preschool and later, a full day in-home daycare (Northwest Child Development Center). Working with young children was her passion in life.
Just a few years ago, we were able to find Yvonne’s birth parents through DNA testing. Sadly, Yvonne’s birth mother had died when Yvonne was just 2 years old, but we were able to visit her grave in San Angelo, Texas.
Yvonne was an outgoing, personable woman who loved talking with her preschool families. She always had a variety of small and large animals, both for the school and for her family. Additionally, her hobbies were interior design, searching her past, and spending time with her children and her grandchild. Her favorite singer was Ray Charles. She will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her children, William Thomas Streety and Susanne Penelope Streety, and her grandchild, Tanner Brant Streety.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Mack Streety, Jr.
A funeral service for Yvonne will be held Saturday, August 13, 2022 at 10:00 AM at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas 78752.
