Yes, I think of my brother Paul from time to time.  What I remember the most is  his gentle loving smile, and his invitation to sit and chat about God, and life.  Pleasant memories indeed.


A month ago I kissed my dad's forehead and hugged him for the very last time. In the wake of this great loss I am left feeling conflicted - strong one moment and weak the next. He was not just my father, he was a phenomenal example of a great human being. He had unwavering love and devotion for his family and was known for his kindness, generosity, honesty and integrity.  I was so blessed  to have spent the last five years together.  Nothing comforts me more than knowing that he enjoyed a long successful life, rich in the pleasures that were meaningful to him - his faith, family, friends, peace and simplicity. I miss him so dearly. It is said that grief is the price we pay for love; but with all that love offers, it is a worthwhile price!

My Dédé was a remarkable man.  I have never known a kinder, more generous, honest and loving human being.  We are blessed to have had him in our lives for so many years, including those of my children (his great-grandchildren).  

There isn't anything he wouldn't do for family.  
He loved to talk, tell stories, watch funny movies. 
He loved to laugh and make us laugh and smile. He never wanted us to be sad, albeit to our detrement at times when we stayed up way past our bedtime when he was on babysitting duty!   He took us to the park, he played tricks on us, even chased kites that flew out of our hands half way across Châteaguay (or so it seemed at the time).   And he loved to tell us how everything we do in life could all be boiled down to "Mathematics", a word, to this day, I can't hear without thinking about him. 

I see how the  family values that he established in his home, inevitably translated to the family values my dad established for us, and I hope to do their efforts justice with my own family. 

Dédé: thank you for showing us love, patience, kindness, compassion and faith.  

I remember Paul  as a loving, warm man of god. His smile always had a twinkle in his eyes. He had a gentle soul and always a welcoming heart. I loved his sense of humor! He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.  

We don't know what we had until it is taken away.  However, I was one of the privileged ones to have had the pleasure, and  blessing of meeting my brother Paul.  We quickly recognized that we loved and served the same Jesus, our Lord and Savior.  We never spent much time together, however, every time we did meet, he would introduce me to a chair where we could chat.  Gods' grace and mercy were always an integral part of our conversations.  He was the sort of kind, gentle, loving man whose warm and inviting manner would engage anyone in a gentle conversation.  Those close to him, I am sure, will miss him dearly.  I am looking forward to his welcoming me when we meet again.

I first met Dede about 12 years ago at his home in Chateauguay, Quebec. He and Nene welcomed me in as if I was their very own grandchild. I have never experienced such a warm welcome from someone I never knew before, but with Dede this was who he was to the very end. He wanted to share his world with me and get to know me as well. It was in this short time with him that I knew that Dede was someone very special. 
As if it was fate I discovered that Nene and Dede's neighbour in Chateaugay was a family friend of mine as well. Talk about a small world! Some 25 years ago I would play at that neighbour's house not knowing that Nene and Dede would be my future grandparents.

I will forever have fond memories of us talking about politics, God or our shared passion for engineering while having a cup of tisane. I always enjoyed listening to Dede's great stories of the past; of war, family and struggle, or one of his funny jokes that would make Nene roll her eyes. He loved to get a rise from her but you could always see his deep love for her at the same time. Dede was not one to complain even when the business of life made it difficult to sit down and chat with him. Even so, he was always understanding and patient. My one regret was not taking every opportunity to talk and spend more time with him.
I never knew my grandfather,  I was too young to know either. But when Dede came into my life I knew he was my grandfather I never had. God has blessed me with such a wonderful grandfather like Dede. I hope to be like him when I am old and gray. Always positive, always loving; a great sense of humor and a great man of God.

God bless you Dede, you are one of a kind and will forever be missed.

 Oncle Boghos is what I always called him.  
He was a wonderful,  compassionate person with a good sense of humor.
I have treasured memories of  trips to Chateaugauy visiting my Oncle, Tantig, Teta and cousins;  reciprocal trips to Forest Hills in the famous station wagon , Aziza:  family picnics at Sunken Meadows; and so much more…..❤️ 
I will always remember him as my kind, loving oncle whose birthday I never forgot since  it was a day before mine and who was a perfectionist.....  a Virgo after call .  
Although he has left us, he will always remain in my heart with love.






My sweet Dede. I’m pretty sure that I got my love of music from him- he was always singing and he especially loved classical music. When I was little and would go over to my grandparents’, he’d put on this movie on the life of Mozart for me. It may not have been the most exciting movie for a little kid, but I just loved the music in it and asked to watch the movie over and over! With a huge smile on his face, he recalled stories of me dancing as a little girl. I was an angel in his eyes- that’s what he always called me. But he was the real angel.   

Kind, loving, jovial... I rarely saw him upset. He loved life, loved to have fun. When my sisters and I were young and he and my grandma lived with us, anytime my parents would go out and leave my grandparents to watch us, he’d get us kids chanting “Par-ty! Par-ty!” the second my parents would leave 😆 Anyone he met for the first time was treated like family too- he’d have them sit with him, want to know all about them, their religious and political views, (their intentions towards me if they were a boyfriend!), and then he’d share his own life story with them. That’s just who he was.  

Sometimes he’d make some off-color joke, but it was always in good fun, never to harm. Always the jokester, we always knew when he had a trick up his sleeve because he’d look at my sisters and me and wink/stick out his tongue, with this look that said ‘watch this, we’re gonna have some fun here!’ My grandma was usually the target of his teasing- it was easy to get her riled up. But just as quickly, all was forgiven again without either one of them having to say a word. I so loved watching my grandparents together, listening to my grandpa rave about my grandma  and how much she meant to him, as he gingerly held her hand. 

I could go on and on about the kind of man he was! He has taught me so much about life, God, relationships, etc. He has truly helped make me the person I am today, and I’m very grateful to have had him in my life.

Unfortunately I didn’t have the pleasure to meet him in person but I’m sure that he is another angel in heaven taking care of his family...

There are so many great things I could say about grandpa that I don’t even know where to start, despite not knowing him like everybody else. I’m so grateful that he made me feel like another member of the family, and every time I would video call him and Nene I can feel their love for me. I’m grateful to God that I have a little piece of his memory on my side in the form of my husband. He was a wonderful and caring person exemplified by the way he raised his children and grandchildren. 

Thank u grandpa for all the love and care that you showed me and my family. I’m sure that when Greg and I start to build our own family, you’ll always be there making us feel all your love...

If I could write down all the stories I have about my Dede, I could probably fill multiple volumes of books that rival an Encyclopedia Britannica collection. However, if there is one story that would best describe my grandfather’s character, it is the (in)famous story of the ‘frog and the boat’.  I remember my first pet as a child was a small frog I used to keep in a small container. I travelled with my parents from Toronto to Chateauguay with my new pet, excited to show it to my Nene and Dede. Upon arrival, my grandfather decided that my frog would be better off in larger accommodations so he filled a small tub with water. We released the frog in the tub; it happily swam around. Due to his love for all creatures big and small, my grandfather then thought it would be a good idea to place a small paper boat in the tub so the frog could have a bit of fun. The moment that boat touched the water, the frog somehow swam onto the boat, jumped out of the tub and onto the ledge of the balcony. Before we had a chance to take a step towards the ledge, the frog had already jumped down a height of at least 20 feet onto the grass below. I ran down the stairs to see if my frog was ok; unfortunately, I could not find my frog. I ran down to the basement where my grandmother was sewing. She could see the tears in my eyes and asked me what happened. As a sad seven-year-old kid who just lost his first pet, the only reply I had for her was ‘your husband is weird’. My grandfather, whose imagination is rivalled only by the kindness of his heart, took me to the store and bought me a nice, fully equipped aquarium with enough space to hold at least five frogs. Although I lost a frog that day, I gained an understanding of the unconditional love my grandfather had for me.  
He was one of the few people I knew who could give you the shirt off his back one moment, then make a joke about that same shirt the next. 
As his only grandson, I will sorely miss my Dede!


For Dede, family was everything. I remember a full house for holidays and all the cousins running around their home.   My fondest memories were of my brother and I spending these holidays and our summers with our grandparents. There was never a dull moment with Dede and he made each day unforgettable. Whether he was playing jokes on Nene or keeping us busy with some activity, I never wanted my time with him to end.

As a young child, I remember one particular incident while Nene and Dede stopped at a rest station during one of our long drives. Greg and I were playing with one of the vending machines and suddenly, multiple cans of pop started ejecting from the machine. When we brought the cans to the car and informed Dede they were “free”, he immediately grabbed all of them and returned them back. He wasn’t only trying to teach us about honesty, this is just simply how he lived his life.

To an amazing grandfather and perfect example of a human being. I only wish my son could have met you. Watch him from above and keep him safe. Love always

I remember in our youth at home in Chateauguay, every Sunday for years dad (Babby) would want us to get together as a family.  Mid-morning after breakfast, including our grandmother (Teta) when she was with us, it would be “family time”.  Mom would prepare the coffee for them and we would all gather around in the living room and spend quality time together.  Dad would have us three kids perform.  I would play the piano, George the violin and Nora would sing. Those were the happy days and life was much simple.  
Until almost at the very end, every time I visited him in Aylmer, Dad would want me, mom and Nora to sit with him and chat.  We had a thing…..as he knew how much I enjoyed drinking tea, in order to get me to sit down with him he would say “is it tea time”?  I will make some tea and sit and enjoy a cup of tea with him and sometimes he would simply say “vien t’asseoir et parlons”!!!   I will never ever forget those precious moments.  My Babby!!!!!!

 


Paul (Boghos) Aslanian was so delicate in his feeling and so fatherly to those that needed it.  I lost my father at 21 years of age and a few years later I married Mary his first daughter. He became my second father and helped us in our journey to being a separate family. I remember in 1995 when I was sick in Toronto he as my second father came to Toronto many times to support us in this difficult times. I would never forget that incident to the end of my life.

Now I am a father and like hell to be the father like he was to me. My son and my daughter can testify whether I succeeded or not.

I will always miss him and the advice he gave to me.

My sweet grandpa Dede, how did I get so blessed that God would give you to be my grandpa and my children's great-grandpa? The very best grandpa that one could ever have! I could fill a novel describing the role model that he was to me and everyone around, so many precious memories that will last a lifetime.
When I think of Dede, the one word that comes to mind the most is “love”. He was filled with the love of God and it oozed out of him touching everyone that crossed his path. 
The bible says that: 
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. (1 Corinthians 13:4-6)
That right there describes Dede to a T, he was pure love. This makes it so much harder to lose such a huge love in my life. 
Dede, thank you for being a living example of what it is to love. I will do my best to carry that on in my heart and in the way that I treat everyone around me. I miss you deeply and look forward to the day when we will be together again.

My Dede 

I thank God every day that I was able to have such a close relationship with my Dede. From the very start of my life, he's been a rock. Someone I've greatly looked up to and admired. Someone who helped raise me. Who taught me about integrity and morals. Who sat at the kitchen table with me every night as a kid to help me with my homework. Who always had the biggest smile on his face when he was teaching me something new. 

I am so truly blessed to have been able to spend the last five or so years with him living just a few minutes away. I will miss going over for coffee and chats, and bringing all my friends over to chat with him too because he was just that sociable and inviting. My friends who met him always had the same remarks- that he was so incredibly welcoming, kind, funny and knowledgeable. He loved to talk about politics, religion, social matters, and he knew everything about everything. That was my Dede... 

I'll miss hanging with him on the patio and singing songs together, recording videos of our singing. He would always ask me to record videos of songs he/we sang and would love watching them over. A few days before his passing, I showed him an old video of us singing Joy to the World. He was barely conscious and quite delirious, and hardly recognized anything or anyone at this point. But when I told him that this was him and I singing, the biggest smile lit up on his face. These things we did together brought him so much joy, and me too. 

He was my best friend and I miss him so much. He impacted so many lives and left a legacy behind. I could go on forever about my Dede. He was the best grandpa ever. I will cherish our memories forever. Love you Dede ❤️ 

When I think of Uncle Boghos, a gentleman comes to mind.  When  I was young, my father, mother and I loved visiting Chateauguay quite often even if it was just for the weekend.  I felt comfortable and  it was like my second home.  Uncle Boghos was nice, kind, and funny.   I am grateful that Greg, Victoria and Alexander got to know him as well.  It was a blessing to have him in my life.  May god rest his soul.  

A man is reflected in the small stuff he does.  Uncle Boghos was ethical to a fault -- I remember driving to Montreal and needing to change currency.  Thinking that my uncle was high up at a bank and that would get an "insider" rate on Canadian dollars I called him and asked if I could change money at the bank.  He said "sure come on to the bank and I'll meet you in the lobby."  Great I thought and I was there quick and of course he was waiting.  I had cash on hand, showed it to him.  He said "Good now come with me."  Aaaand he walked me to the foreign exchange teller and said "Ok here is where you can change your money."  OF COURSE it would NEVER occur to him to do any "fix" or anything, just the proper channel.  I was a bit flabbergasted but thought "Here is an ethical man down to the slightest detail." Were the world full of such as he.
Another trait was his impish fun -- he could never take a sharp turn on Aziza without enthusiastically yelling "eeeeeeeeeeiieee" the sound of a race car's wheels squealing in the Grand Prix -- and that's one of many he did  -- always playful but never teasing always loving.  I will miss him forever. 

My father taught me many life lessons that have carried me through thick and thin. He taught me not to be afraid of doing things that I've never done before. He taught me that it was OK to fail but not OK to give up. His work ethics were inspiring, his love and dedication to his family was undying and his loyalty to his friends was unquestionable.  My Mom and Dad showed me that life can be simple and enjoyable at the same time. They had little but they shared it all. Everyone was always welcomed at their home. 
I will truly miss our Saturday morning conversations and our solutions to fixing the world. I'm happy that you're now with your father, Teta and your brother Georges.
