Noel Frank Walter Gates

Born in Epping, Essex, England. Passed away peacefully at home, just shy of his 97th birthday. Son of the late Horace Gates and the late Annie Baldock; predeceased by his wife Ilse-Marie (1923-2014), son Christopher (1964-1967) and sister Marjorie (1915-2013); survived by his children Andrew (Véronique), Gregory (Angela), Vivian (Bryan) and Robert/Father Job, grandchildren Jérémie, Marian, Stefanie and Michael, niece Katharine Melville and nephews Jeremy, Peter and Guy Alhadeff along with their children and grandchildren.

Noel was a Graduate of Oxford (Balliol College), Queen's University and l’Université de Montréal. He enjoyed a long career with the Government of Canada (interpreter in the House of Commons, executive with Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council). Noel had a strong sense of social justice and the protection of the natural environment. He was involved in such organizations as the Regional Association of West Quebecers, Amnesty International Canada and the Aylmer SPCA. He was also an occasional stagehand for his wife's travelling puppet shows!

Noel will be greatly missed.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Tommy Law, CISSSO’s palliative care professionals, and Noel’s exceptional homecare team (Abdel, Jacqueline, Elena, Suki, Jean Jacques, Yves, and Valerie), all of whom provided him with such attentive and compassionate care over the past year.

VISITATION; Family and friends are invited to the Racine, Robert & Gauthier Beauchamp funeral home located at 47 Denise-Friend, Gatineau (Aylmer) QC on Saturday September 17, 2022 between 2pm and 4pm to offer their condolences to the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the following organizations would be greatly appreciated; Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders, the Leprosy Mission Canada or the SPCA of Western Quebec.

Il laisse dans le deuil ses enfants Andrew (Véronique), Gregory (Angela), Vivian (Bryan) et Robert/Father Job, et ses petits-enfants Jérémie, Marian, Stefanie et Michael, sa nièce Katharine Melville et ses neveux Jeremy, Peter et Guy Alhadeff ainsi que leurs enfants et petits-enfants.

Noel était diplômé de l'Université d'Oxford (Balliol College), de l'Université Queen's et de l'Université de Montréal. Il a fait carrière dans la fonction publique fédérale (interprète pour la Chambre des communes, membre du Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines). Il avait un fort sentiment de justice sociale et un amour profond envers la nature et les animaux. Il s'est impliqué dans divers organismes tels l'Association régionale des West Quebecers, Amnistie internationale Canada, et la SPCA d’Aylmer. Il a aussi soutenu activement sa femme au cours de ses spectacles ambulants de marionnettes!

Noel va grandement nous manquer.
