Copiague, NY — Bernard Wasser, 89, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed on Monday morning, November 29, after a brief illness. His family was by his side for his final days.
Bernie is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary (Kessler) Wasser of Copiague, New York; his son Scott Wasser of Scarborough, Maine; daughter Dale Limoncelli of Babylon, New York; granddaughters MaryCara Ferdinando, Lauren Amey and Lisa Lopes; grandsons Rich Limoncelli and Brandon Wasser, and great granddaughter Malory Amey.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Bernie was the son of Harry and Molly Wasser. He served in the U.S. Army, during World War II, becoming a corporal while he was stationed in Japan with the occupation forces following the war.
After his honorable discharge from the Army, Bernie went to work with his brother, Ralph, in the fur business. He also worked part-time in the catering business during that time in his life. Within a few years, Bernie took and passed the postal exam and was hired by the U.S. Post Office. After nearly 30 years as a civil servant, he retired to spend more time with his family.
The roots of Bernie’s family were planted a few years after he returned home from the service when he met Mary Kessler. The two dated for about three years before getting married October 4, 1950. Scott was born two years later and Dale three years after that.
Working two jobs to support his growing family, Bernie didn’t have a lot of time for hobbies or vacations. But as the years passed and leisure time grew, his passion for aerobic walking, dancing, socializing, playing cards and bowling grew with it. He also loved going to the Catskill, New York, resorts every summer with his family and relatives.
In his later years, Bernie and Mary achieved one of their goals of buying a condo in Florida. At one point, they had a home in Farmingdale, New York, a home in Deerfield Beach, Florida, and an apartment in Shavertown, Pennsylvania. After selling their New York and Pennsylvania properties, they bought a winter home in Delaware and spent half the year there for a decade before relocating back to Long Island where Bernie spent his final years.
