Charles’s life was marked by resilience, strength, humor, and deep devotion to family. He experienced hardship early in life when his mother passed away following childbirth. At the age of six, while his father went off to war, Charles and his younger brother were placed in an orphanage, separated from their older sister who was taken in by another family. Determined to stay together, Charles insisted on remaining with his brother throughout foster care. In time, the siblings were reunited (including his long lost baby sister), forming bonds that endured throughout their lives.
Charles proudly served his country as a Military Policeman in the United States Army and continued his service in the Army Reserve. A deeply patriotic man, he carried that pride with him throughout his life.
Following his military service, Charles built a varied and accomplished career. He worked for Eastern Airlines, later became an entrepreneur in the Army-Navy retail business, and ultimately concluded his career in retail management at Southside Hospital. He was known as a hardworking, dependable, and resourceful man who took pride in everything he did.
Charles will be remembered for his wit and warmth. He was hysterically funny, sharp, genuine, and full of life. He had a deep love for the outdoors—fishing, gardening, walking, or simply enjoying nature. He lived with a sense of adventure; going skydiving at age 70, hang gliding in the Outer Banks a few years later, and parasailing in Aruba and Lake George.
He had a special love for animals, especially his dogs, who were constant companions. He also found great joy working on his lawn and spending time riding his beloved John Deere tractor.
One of life’s greatest blessings came when Charles met the love of his life, Maria. Their chance meeting blossomed into a 35-year marriage filled with love, laughter, and shared adventures. It was not uncommon to find Charles with a fishing rod in one hand, a drink in the other, and Maria by his side.
Above all else, Charles was devoted to his family. He was incredibly proud of his children and grandchildren, and he cherished his great-grandchildren. His love, guidance, and humor left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Maria; his brother, Edward, his children, Edward (Leeann), Scott (Heather), Lisa (John), Paul (Peg), and Ellen (Rick); his grandchildren, Michael Dean, Ellen Rose, Erik, Samantha, Jason, Erica, Jordan, Parker, Addison and Brody; and his great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Andy, Rowan, and Isla.
He was predeceased by his parents and his siblings, Marion and Rose.
