A longtime resident of North Babylon, N.Y., Eleanor was born in Woodhaven, Queens, on Dec. 1, 1930, one of four children of Edward and May Dorsey. After graduating from Franklin K. Lane High School, Eleanor attended Queens College, where she earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education and was selected Queen of the Campus. She went on to post-graduate study at Columbia University.
Eleanor was loved and revered by her colleagues throughout her more than 40 years as an educator. Her life’s passion was helping children, and as Massapequa’s director of reading for grades K-12, she was instrumental in revamping how schools taught reading and writing across Long Island.
Eleanor was known for her natural grace and elegance, with a radiant smile and an ability to make everyone around her feel welcomed and loved. After her husband’s death in 1982, Eleanor took on the role of both parents in raising her three sons, who loved her more than anything. She always wanted to make every occasion special, for example, sewing their Halloween costumes by hand to make them just right.
An extraordinarily thoughtful and caring woman, Eleanor took interest in the things that were important to the people around her. One lifelong friend said she gave new meaning to the word friendship. And Eleanor had numerous interests herself. She was an avid traveler, honeymooning for three months in Europe and visiting most of the U.S. states, the Caribbean, Mexico, Peru, and Europe many more times. She loved collecting antiques, playing bridge with her friends, and reading on a wide variety of subjects. She could whip up a gourmet fare or comfort food at the drop of a hat, once preparing an impromptu Christmas dinner when her family was snowed in. And she was an active member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Deer Park for nearly five decades and volunteered with the League of Women Voters for many years.
Eleanor was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Kenneth J. Korade; her brother William Dorsey and her sister Margaret Horstmann. She is survived by her children, Kenneth, Matthew and Jeffrey Korade and daughter-in-law Liza Auciello Korade; her brother Rev. Thomas Dorsey and sister-in-law Sharon Dorsey; and her nieces and nephews, Cheryl Mandelbaum and husband Marc, Dale Rose, Brian Dorsey and wife Celeste, and Michael Dorsey.
Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7, at Claude R. Boyd-Spencer Funeral Home, 448 W. Main Street, Babylon, N.Y. Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, at Ascension Lutheran Church, 33 Bay Shore Rd., Deer Park, N.Y. The burial will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park, 2030 Wellwood Ave, Farmingdale, N.Y.
