With deep sadness and overflowing love, we announce the passing of Geraldine — a woman whose life was defined by unwavering love, fierce spirit, and boundless generosity. To know her was to be loved deeply and truly.
Geraldine “Gerry” was born in Brooklyn to Joseph and Helen Virga and was the younger sister to Helen Maggio. The family moved from Sheepshead Bay to Massapequa in the 1970s, and Gerry later moved to Brightwaters with her husband Franklin Smith.
Gerry shared over 30 beautiful years with her beloved husband, Frank, with whom she shared a life full of laughter, devotion, and family. Their love story was one of partnership and true friendship. She now reunites with him, as well as her loving sister and best friend, Helen, in eternal peace.
Gerry cherished her role as a mother above all else. She was extremely proud of her two loving sons, Joseph and John, later welcoming their wives Elizabeth and Michelle. She was a devoted grandmother to William, Matthew, Christopher, Benjamin, Jack, Sophia, Kimberly, Franklin, Lindsey, and Brady. Nothing brought her more joy than being with them. They brought her endless pride and happiness. “Nanny” was their biggest cheerleader, their warmest hug, their safe place.
A lifelong animal lover, Gerry shared her home with three adored cats, and many other well-loved pets over the years. She took great pride in her home and filled it with pictures of loved ones and other personal mementos that had great meaning to her. She also had a fiercely fun side — especially when it came to music and football. A proud and passionate fan of Tom Brady, she cheered with heart, loyalty, and the same fire she brought to all areas of her life.
Her passing leaves a hole in many hearts, but her spirit lives on in every story shared around a kitchen table, every act of kindness, every burst of laughter. Geraldine leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and sincerity — one that will carry on in the lives of all who were blessed to know her.
A visitation for Geraldine will be held Friday, May 30, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Claude R. Boyd/Spencer Funeral Homes, 448 West Main Street, Babylon, NY 11702. Following the visitation will be an interment from 2:30 PM at Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, 2030 Wellwood Ave, Farmingdale, NY 11735.
