

John M. Sykora Jr., 78, of Babylon on November 2, 2017. Beloved husband of Constance Sykora and the late Ellen M. Sykora. Cherished father of John M. Sykora III (Jessica), Karen Sykora O’Brien (Clifford), Maria Cotto Gargano and Cindy Cotto Sharpe (Brian). Loving grandfather of Sean and Megan O’Brien, Lucy and John Sykora IV, J.J. and Anthony Gargano and Michael and Matthew Sharpe. Caring brother of the late Jacqueline McClure.
John graduated from Niagara University in 1961, and was a member of their varsity baseball team. After graduation, he began his teaching career in upstate New York.
John worked as a science teacher and football and tennis coach at Central Islip High School after returning to Long Island. He then worked for almost 30 years at Babylon High School as a guidance counselor and Director of the Guidance Department, as well as a football and baseball coach. In addition, he spent time working as a New York State Parkway Police Officer.
John was a big sports enthusiast. He loved the Brooklyn Dodgers, The New York Mets and The NY Giants. He was passionate when it came to mentoring young people and coaching them in sports.
John was a man of faith, and above all enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed cooking for his family and was the best short-order cook in town. After retirement, John’s life centered around his family and especially his grandchildren, with whom he had very special relationships. He always made time for their various activities, sporting events and special occasions. He truly knew what was important in life. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Family and friends may visit at the Claude R. Boyd-Spencer Funeral Home, 448 West Main Street, Babylon NY, Sunday and Monday 2:00-4:30 pm and 7:00-9:30 pm. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, 10:00am at St. Joseph's RC Church, Babylon, NY. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Coram NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s name to The Ronald McDonald House, St. Jude Children’s Hospital or an organization of your choice.
