Winfield "Win" A. Boerckel, of West Islip, at peace on May 3, 2023, after a short fight with brain cancer. He leaves behind his best friend and loving wife of 38 years, Nancy, and his sons, Winfield, Jr., and his wife, Anne, and David and his wife, Kelly. He is also survived by his adoring grandchildren, Maddie and Kathryn, along with many cousins and friends. Win is predeceased by his parents, Winfield Scott Boerckel and Ethel Meaney Boerckel, his first wife, Mary Bosch Boerckel, and his sister, Patricia Stalzer.
After his college years at Saint John's University and earning his MBA from Michigan State University, Win proudly served as a lieutenant in the United States Coast Guard, as well as working a few years for the Penn Central Railroad, and then 23 years as a manager in the engineering department of the Long Island Railroad.
In a remarkable second act, Win obtained his MSW from Adelphi University, before embarking on a 25-year professional mission to help those battling cancer and their families as an oncological social worker for the non-profit CancerCare, during which time he also served on the board of the Global Lung Cancer Coalition Board for over 20 years. During his last year of life, Win discovered a new joy in volunteering as a docent for the Fire Island Lighthouse, particularly at the boat house, where he engaged with visitors both young and old, and regaled them with stories of the U.S. Lifesaving Service, one of the antecedents to the United States Coast Guard in which he served.
A visitation will take place at Claude R. Boyd-Spencer Funeral Home, 448 W. Main Street, Babylon, Monday, May 8, 2023, 2:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m. & 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. An interment of his ashes will take place at a later date at Calverton National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Win's memory to the cancer foundation of your choice.
