Delbert David Schaffrick was born on October 8, 1945, the second of four children to Gus and Eva Schaffrick. He grew up on the family farm in the Tiger Lily area, where he worked alongside his mother and father. He attended elementary school at Littleport before his family moved to Barrhead. After spending a few years working in the oil industry, Delbert began his long career as a postal clerk. On June 11, 1966, he married Judy Schmaus at St. John’s Lutheran Church, and together they built a loving family.
Delbert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Judy; their three sons, David (Yipsy), Jason (Leahan), and Lyle; seven grandchildren, Justine, Krysta (Adam Webb), Lindy, Miles, Riley, Brooke, and Brycen; and two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Lexi Webb. He is also survived by his siblings, Ruby Maygut, Alice (Gene Schmaus), and Dale (Susan). An avid outdoorsman and sportsman, Delbert found great joy in activities like baseball, golf, curling, hockey, and playing cards. He was a proud member of the slow-pitch team “Over the Hill” and cherished the many memories made on and off the field. Camping, fishing, and hunting with his family and friends were among his greatest pleasures, always accompanied by laughter and stories. In his later years, Delbert enjoyed spending countless hours at the senior drop-in center, playing pool and cards with friends. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy of adventure will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2025 at 10:30 am at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Barrhead. Donations are gratefully accepted to the charity of your choice.
