June 28, 1913 - February 3, 2014
It is with mixed emotion that we announce the passing away of Jennie. She will be greatly missed by many, but we celebrate her full life and we rejoice in the knowledge that she now rests in God's grace, beyond care and pain
Jennie is lovingly remembered by her five children, Manny (Lois) Nanninga, Henry (Rose) Nanninga, Alvin (Irene) Nanninga, Patricia (Peter) Elzinga and Ron (Hazel) Nanninga; her 23 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. Her sisters Annie Tuininga, Rulie Nanninga and brother Albert (Clara) Schoonekamp will also miss her. Jennie was predeceased by her husband Ike on May 19, 1964, granddaughter Lynn Nanninga on Feb.1, 2002 and daughter-in-law Joanne on Feb. 23, 2010.
Jennie was born in Edmonton, Alberta on June 28, 1913. She was the oldest of four children, born to Hendrik and Petertje Schoonekamp. Jennie was 2 years old when her family moved to Neerlandia, where they homesteaded. On March 25th, 1934 Jennie married Ike Nanninga. Ike and Jennie started out by homesteading a quarter section of land. Their five children were born and raised in Neerlandia. Ike and Jennie retired from farming and moved to Edmonton in 1963. Ike passed away suddenly in May of 1964 which changed Jennie’s life and their plans for retirement.
For many years Jennie’s home was a boarding place for nieces and nephews as well as others from Neerlandia, Edmonton and other communities who came to the city to work or study. Jennie also worked cleaning homes and as a cook in a nursing home until her retirement at age 65.
Jennie was an active member of the Christian Reformed Church in both Neerlandia and Edmonton and showed her devotion to God in all aspects of her life. She talked often of her many blessings and the wonders of God’s creation. She loved gardening, oil painting, sewing, knitting, going for walks and reading. She spoke often of her grandchildren and was so proud of them and prayed that they would all know Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
In her later years Jennie lived in Summit Village, Emmanuel Home and McConnell Place West and moved into Touchmark in 2012.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 2:00 PM at the Christian Reformed Church in Neerlandia, AB with Pastor Bill Tunninga officiating. Interment will take place in the Neerlandia Cemetery.
