Alan Joseph "A.J." Adelman

Alan Joseph “AJ” Adelman, 58, of Bartlett, died Tuesday after a 5-month bout with cancer. It was his second time to battle the disease, having suffered with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 1980, at the age of 23. Adelman retired in September after serving over 36 years as a firefighter for the city of Bartlett, 31 of those years as a pumper Driver. He was also a state certified Emergency Medical Technician and certified Fire Service Instructor. Adelman was the eldest son of retired District Fire Chief Richard M. Adelman and Rita M. Adelman, who both died in 2008. He graduated from Bartlett High School in 1975 and went on to complete many fire service training courses during his career. He also served as a Bartlett volunteer fireman from 1973 to 1979 and was a founding member of Bartlett Firefighters Local 3583. Adelman was also a musician. He was an avid drummer who played with various local bands over a 40-year span. He leaves his wife of 8 years, Margaret Ann Scola Adelman, his brother, William T. “Bill” Adelman of Horn Lake, and two nephews, Dr. Scott Adelman of Memphis and Eric Adelman of Oakland. He also leaves a sister-in-law, Mary Robinson, brother-in-law Dan Robinson, and niece Katie Robinson, all of Bartlett. Visitation will be on Sunday, December 27, 2015, from 2-5 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 N. Germantown Road, Bartlett, TN. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 28, 2015 at St. Ann Catholic Church, 6529 Stage Road in Bartlett, with burial to follow at Memphis Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens on Germantown Road. A reception will follow the burial at St. Ann Family Life Center. Remembrances may be sent to the Firefighters Regional Burn Center in Memphis or the American Cancer Society.
