

Commander Bruce Lloyd Northrup, United States Navy, Retired, of Bartlett, TN, passed away peacefully at the age of 69 on May 5, 2016. He was born on January 3, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois and was the oldest of nine children born to Robert and Shirley Northrup. Commander Northrup had a long and honorable career in the United States Navy having entered as an enlisted man in 1968 and retired as a Commander in 2001, making him a part of a small group of officers privileged to be called Mustangs. While in service in Honolulu, Commander Northrup graduated MAGNA CUM LAUDE with a Bachelors degree from Chaminade University of Honolulu; Commander Northrup ended his long career in 2001 while attached to the Naval Personnel Department in Millington. After retirement he was an active member of the Military Officer Association of America and was a past president of the Davies Plantation Homeowners Association. Commander Northrup is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Shirley Northrup, his sisters Diann Head and Debbie Freeze and brother-in-law Richard Behnen. His loving wife of thirty-five years Lana, as well as his daughter Aimee Queen, two grandchildren Jeremy Brannon (USMC) and Allyson Queen survive him. He is also survived by his siblings, brother Dennis Northrup and five sisters Patricia Ellen Behnen, Marcia Northrup LaBarge (Ken), Nancy Northrup, Bonnie Fuller (Jim), and Barbara Northrup.Funeral services will be held at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 N. Germantown Rd. Bartlett, TN on Friday, May 20th.The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. A memorial service will begin at 2:00 p.m. followed by a full military burial. There will then be a reception at the funeral home. The family requests in lieu of flowers that you please make any donation to the International Myeloma Foundation or to Life Blood Bartlett.
