Dorris D. Mitchell

Dorris Dyle Mitchell, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, age 91, of Piperton, TN, passed away February 20, 2014. He was born July 15, 1922 in Denmark, MS, the son of the late Benjamin Franklin Mitchell and Sarah Ellen Fuller Mitchell. He was a deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years at Lamar Heights Baptist Church and was a current member of Piperton Baptist Church. Dorris was a veteran, serving as a Staff Sergeant and tank commander in the US Army during WWII. He engaged in battles in Okinawa and the Philippine Islands. He was a retired barber, barbering in Memphis for over 60 years. Mr. Mitchell loved God, family, and country with all his heart. Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Lenora Mitchell, his son, Jerry Mitchell (Marcia); daughter, Lynn Mitchell; grandson Jason Mitchell (Catherine); granddaughter Emily Gourley (Russell); seven great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; mother of two great-granchildren, Sheri Summerford, and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Sunday February 23, 2014 from 3-6pm and a Celebration of Life service will be held Monday February 24, 2014 at 10am, all at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 N. Germantown Rd. Bartlett. Interment with military honors will be held at Memorial Gardens onsite.
