

EARL HENDRIX HAMPTON, JR., 86, died October 5, 2010 at his home in Germantown. He was born in Bolton on August 16, 1924, the son of Earl Hendrix Hampton, Sr. and Marie Johnson Hampton. He graduated from Bolton High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. A retired Certified Public Accountant, he retired from the Internal Revenue Service in 1976 as the Director of the Audit Division of the Memphis Service Center. He served as president of the Memphis Chapter of the Tennessee Association of Public Accountants. He was a founder and charter member of the Hampton Memorial United Methodist Church, at which he served as building committee chairman and for many years as Sunday School superintendent. He was a life-long farmer on land his great-grandfather purchased from Wade Hampton Bolton in northeast Shelby County in 1869. He leaves his loving wife of 66 years, Martha Holland Hampton; three children, Earl Kennon Hampton (Molly McCalla), Charlotte Marie Hampton Roberson (James) and Lee Holland Hampton (Rebecca Peterson); five grandchildren, Angela Lea Roberson Donnelly (Brian), Lee McCalla Hampton (Kristen Day), Jon Knox Hampton; four great-grandchildren, Jason Patrick Donnelly, Jack Thomas Donnelly, Thomas Mingxiong Hampton, and Elizabeth Minghui Hampton; a sister, Marianne Hampton Jameson (James); a brother, James Roy Hampton (Nancy Smith); a niece, Gail Hampton Jameson Bruno; a nephew, Brent Smith Hampton (Sarah Barker);; two great-nephews, James Michael Bruno (Robin Bradford) and Corey Blake Bruno; and many loyal clients and caregivers, Tanya Morrow and Joyce Pitts. His cousin, Anita Hampton Martin, predeceased him. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, October 7 at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, Germantown Road Chapel. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, October 8 at the Hampton Memorial United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Bethuel Cemetery.
