

Dr. Manley was born on November 6, 1936, in Jackson, Tennessee to the late Emmett Steadman and Laverne Willis Manley, Sr.
Prior to attending the UT College of Pharmacy Dr. Manley attended Lambuth University, University of Memphis, and Vanderbilt University. Following completion of his undergraduate degree in 1959 at UT College of Pharmacy he was awarded his Doctor of Philosophy in pharmacology/physiology at the UT College of Medicine in 1963. He completed a two year research fellowship in cardiovascular physiology at The Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University.
He returned to UT Memphis in 1965, rejoining his old department of pharmacology in the College of Medicine where he taught pharmacology to health sciences students for the next ten years. During this period he served as course director for all pharmacology courses for pharmacy students. In 1975, he moved to the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri where he served as pharmacology chairman and academic associate dean for another ten year period.
He returned to Memphis once more in 1985, this time to accept positions within the UT College of Pharmacy, where he was fully engaged in a variety of academic endeavors – he taught, conducted research, published, supervised graduate students, joined many professional organizations, and held the title of professor and assistant dean. He was the recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the UT National Alumni Association’s Outstanding Teaching Award.
Outside the scientific world, Dr. Manley had been actively involved in financial planning/investing for over 40 years. Since the early 1980’s he presented numerous programs on these topics to medical and pharmacy groups.
His personal interests include a lifelong obsession with golf, nature study, science, fishing, military history, gardening/hobby farming, calligraphy, photography, computers, financial planning, food and wine, and woodturning.
Along with his parents, Dr. Manley was preceded in death by his wife Rilla; and his sister Jane.
Emmett's memory lives on through his son Emmett (Nancy) Manley, III of Knoxville, Tennessee and his daughter Melinda Manley of Memphis; two granddaughters Rebecca (Ian) Grenier and Emily (James) Marker; and three great-grandchildren Cecelia Grenier, and Chloe Webb and Ethan Marker.
