Hazel was born In Leachville, Arkansas (although Missouri was home for most of her childhood) on September 1, 1934, to Bill and Lillian Biggs. She was raised on a farm and was the oldest of 9 children. She was a much-loved older sister and second mother to her siblings.
Hazel attended Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee where she sang in the choir. She was relatively new to the church when another choir member, Tom McCormack, noticed someone asking Hazel if she needed a ride home after choir practice one evening. Tom decided then and there to be the first to offer Hazel a ride the following week. He did, she said yes, and they were married for 60 years. Tom and Hazel had a wonderful marriage full of faith, family, friends and travel.
Hazel and Tom were members of Bellevue Baptist for their entire 60-year marriage. Hazel taught 3-year-olds and coordinated the 3-year-olds at church. She loved children and loved teaching them about Jesus and God’s Word. She served her church faithfully for about 50 years in the preschool ministry. She loved Jesus and served others in her everyday life cooking meals, caring for family members, and always a kind friend.
She was a wonderful and devoted Mom to Andrea McCormack Reese (Allan Reese), and Bryant McCormack (Christie McCormack) and an amazing Mimmie to David and Drew Reese, and Kylie and Kara McCormack. She was not just any Mimmie. She was young at heart and was very active with her grandkids. She could be found riding a carousel, making flubber, playing on a playground or on a shopping excursion (of which there were many)! Hazel’s grandkids knew their Mimmie loved them big and she was their biggest cheerleader!
While we mourn her loss here, we celebrate her homecoming to be with her Savior for we do not grieve as those who have no hope.
Visitation for Hazel McCormack will be at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens (3700 N Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, TN) on Monday, October 6th from 1 pm-2 pm with services at 2:00 pm and the burial to follow.
