The eighth of sixteen children of Spencer Webster Hall and Roberta Harp Hall grew up in Moro, Arkansas. At the age of eighteen on Christmas Day, she married Tommie Chaney. To this union two children were born, a son, James Davis (J.D.) Chaney, died at seven months; and a daughter, Mary Ann (Chaney) McNeil.
Hettie retired from Memphis Speech and Hearing-Memphis State University and began managing sales in the Herb Department of Champion’s Pharmacy. Her thorough work ethics and organizational skills continued to be appreciated.
She exhibited a true love and devotion for Mt. Olive Cathedral C.M.E. Church. Her impact was evidenced by her faithful work, respect and support of Church initiatives. Hettie delighted in serving as President of the Willing Workers, Treasurer of Stewardess Board #1, and member of Sunday School Class #4 until her health issues prevented participation. She served from home as a member of the “80 Plus Prayer Warriors” and by sending birthday cards and checking on the well being of others by phone.
Hettie spent her life “…letting her light so shine, that we may see her good works and glorify our heavenly Father…” Matthew 5:13-16.
Hettie’s memory will be cherished by Mary Ann and Christopher McNeil, sisters, Theressa Hall White, Marianna, Arkansas, and Florine Hall Motley, Helena, Arkansas, and other relatives.
