Jimmie (Jim) Lee Willis, 89, passed away peacefully in Jackson, TN, on April 25, 2025. Jim was born in Dothan, AL, on November 27, 1935, to J.B. and Foye Willis. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lupe, and his granddaughter Kirsten.
While in the military, Jim met the love of his life, Guadalupe Hernandez, whom he affectionately called Lupe. They married and traveled extensively while starting their family. They eventually retired in the Memphis area to be close to their grandchildren.
He leaves behind a loving family who will carry forward his spirit and values: his son Larry (Melissa) Willis, his daughter Mary (Bill) O'Kelly, three grandchildren—Berkeley, Christina, and Taylor—and many great-grandchildren.
Jim lived a life marked by hard work, precision, and generosity. He began his career proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force, where he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. His expertise in radar systems and programming led him to a distinguished civilian career managing large private network systems and mentoring countless others in the field.
Known for being as kind and generous as he was determined, Jim touched the lives of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. Beyond his professional achievements, he was a voracious reader with a passion for researching genealogy. He also had a deep love for woodworking, spending countless hours crafting pieces that showcased both his curious mind and skilled hands. Jim had a bold palate, always enjoying spicy food, homemade potato soup, and a good slice of German chocolate cake.
Above all, he was simply a cool dude—someone whose warmth, humor, and strength will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A memorial gathering for Jimmie will be held Wednesday, April 30, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 North Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, TN 38133.
