Joe was born November 26, 1948, in Memphis, TN where he lived until he moved to Somerville, TN in 2010.He met the love of his life, Carolyn Prince, as a child at church. They were married on July 3, 1971, and shared 52 wonderful years together. Joe was raised at Rosamond Church of God and he and his wife have been faithful members of First Assembly of God for 40 years.
After graduating from Treadwell High School, Joe started a carpenter’s apprenticeship with the Memphis Carpenter’s Union and then advanced to the level of Master Trim Carpenter. He worked for Arnet Embry Construction, Holiday Inn Woodcraft Division, MCDR Construction, St. Francis Hospital and Specialty Feeds. As a master carpenter his trim work is showcased locally in places like the Panda Exhibit at the Memphis Zoo, the Memphis Federal Reserve Bank, the Cook Convention Center, the University of Memphis Library, and the Mallory-Neely House, just to name a few. In 1995 the Art Department of The University of Memphis honored him as a “Lost Artist” for his rare trim carpentry skills and work.
Joe loved nature and enjoyed outdoor hobbies that included backpacking, road bicycling, hiking, hunting, and archery. He frequently traveled with Carolyn to Mountain View Arkansas to listen to Blue Grass music. In his retirement years he learned to fly a drone and transitioned his carpentry skills into woodworking and woodturning.
Ministry was a lifetime focus for Joe. He loved working with children; many children and parents know him as Papa Joe. For over 50 years he served in various ministries like Royal Rangers, Coaching T-Ball, Choir, Childrens Church, Nursery, Building sets for music department, Church bus ministry, Kids camp counselor, Construction mission trips, and Royal Family Kids Camp.
Joe is survived by his wife, Carolyn (Prince) Hall, Son Jason Hall and his wife Cristen, Daughter Jennifer Davis and her husband Brian, Grand Children, Zoe, Caden and Colby Hall, Sister Voncille Rye, and many beloved nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Buford and Lucille Hall, and his infant brother Luther Henry Hall.
A memorial service for Joe will be held Saturday, September 23, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at 1st Assembly Memphis, 8650 Walnut Grove Road, Cordova, TN 38018.
