Margie M. Holmes

Margie Moyer Holmes, 84, fell asleep in the loving arms of the angels on January 30, 2014. She was born to Frank and Clara Moyer of Newbern, Tennessee on August 1, 1929. The family relocated to Carroll County Tennessee where her days were spent working the family farm with her sister, Letty and her two brothers Landon and Ben. She graduated from Trezevant High School in 1947 and later that same year, she married William R. Holmes. The family moved to Memphis, Tennessee in the early 1950s where she began working for the Memphis Park Commission. Margie worked hard for the park commission and retired in 1984 after 27 years of service. During the last fourteen years of her park commission career, she was the director of the Peabody Senior Citizen’s center. She revitalized the center’s programs, in fact, the choral and drama group from Peabody performed at the White House in 1981. After four short years of retirement, the Mayor of Bartlett recruited her to organize a senior citizen center in Bartlett. Initially, the senior citizen’s group met in a few rooms at Singleton Community Center, but grew to a point where they received their own building. Dances, bridge games, exercise classes, trips, and many other activities were organized and provided to the senior citizens of Bartlett. Margie finally retired in 2007, but was not ready to rest. She became active in the Sterling Place neighborhood association and wrote articles about the neighborhood for the Lakeland City Watch. She was predeceased by her parents, siblings, husband, and a grandson and is survived by one son, Frank Holmes (Maria) of Huntsville, Texas, one daughter, Midge Gurley (Joe) of Memphis, Tennessee, four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. The visitation will be held Saturday, February 22nd at 1:00 P.M. and the memorial service will begin at 2:00 P.M. at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens at 3700 N. Germantown Road. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
