Sam Harris

SAMUEL E. HARRIS passed away Thursday, May 1, 2014 peacefully at home with his family at his side. He was born in rural. ARK, the son of Mattie Lee and Samuel D. Harris. He is predeceased by 2 sisters and 4 brothers; and is survived by his youngest brother Donald. He served with the US Army at Ft Sill, OK from 1951-1953. He married Marguerite Child in July 1952. He attended Arkansas State University where he graduated with a degree in Accounting. From there he and his wife and small children, Deborah Anne and Samuel David, moved to Memphis. He worked for Firestone in Memphis from 1956 until the plant closed in 1982. He enjoyed a brief retirement before joining Southern Security Credit Union in 1985. He retired from there in 2000. That too was brief as he was coaxed back in 2002. His final retirement was in 2003. After that he enjoyed time at home with his wife, Marguerite. His many activities included singing in the Memphis Opera as well as the choir at St Louis Catholic Church for 37 years. He and his wife enjoyed many rounds of golf and golf trips. After retirement he discovered another passion-cooking. He is survived by his daughter Deborah Anne Westbrook and her son Ian Robert Westbrook and his daughter Pax Amora Sophia Westbrook, her daughter Lisa Renee McKim and her children Molly, Chelsea and Chloe and her daughter Megan Alexis Westbrook. He is predeceased by his son Samuel David. He is also survived by the children of his deceased son Samuel David: Cody, Cory, Sam and Justin. Services are to be held Tuesday, May 6 at St Louis Catholic Church. Visitation is to be held at 9:30 and the Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the American Lung Association – Freedom from Smoking.
