

He was born April 14, 1909 in Roanoke, IL to Samuel and Emma (Holliger) Zimmerman. He married Helen Rapp June 5, 1938 in Peoria. She passed away June 19, 1995 in Peoria. He was also preceded in death by four sisters: Em, Julia, Elsie, Frances and five brothers: David, Andrew, Samuel, Robert, and Edward.
Survivors include two daughters: Julie (David) McIntire of Quincy, Mary (Kirby) Hamm of Peoria, four grandsons: Brett (Christine) McIntire of San Rafael, CA, Darren (Kristin) McIntire of Hamilton, MI, Ryan (Loretta) Hamm of Rolling Meadows, IL, Derek (Chris) Hamm of Hanna City, IL, three great-grandchildren: Drake, Brock Hamm, Carson McIntire, and one brother, Raymond Zimmerman of Pekin.
Eugene served in WWII as a Lt. Commander in the Navy from 1943 through 1944. During this time he was in charge of the officer’s mess under General MacArthur. He served in Brisbane, Australia, Hollandia, New Guinea, Leyte and Manila, Philippines. He was present when Gen. MacArthur ordered that a meal would be served with china and silver to the Japanese when they surrendered in Manila at the Grand Central Hotel. Following the war he was a member of the Naval Reserve.
He graduated from Bradley University and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha. At Bradley his roommate was Jack Brickhouse.
He first worked as a Sales Rep. for Burlington Industries, and later was a Tax Preparer for Sharp Income Tax.
Eugene was a member of the Peoria Masonic Lodge # 46, lifetime member of the Scottish Rite, member of the Mohammed Shrine Temple. He coordinated Shriner’s Parades in Central Illinois for 14 years. He was a charter member and past commander of Mohammed Legion of honor and a member of its Color Guard team. He was a member of the Mohammed Senior Noble’s, Retired Officers Association, Peoria American Legion Post 2, and the Peoria VFW.
He volunteered at Methodist and Proctor Hospital until he was 90 years old.
Visitation will be Saturday Dec. 10, 2011 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Davison-Fulton Bartonville Chapel in Peoria. Funeral services will be private at a later time.
Entombment will be in American Mausoleum.
Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital or the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy.
