Helen M. Walkup

Helen M. Walkup, 93, of Peoria passed away on Monday July 20, 2015 at the Lutheran Hillside Village. Helen was born on December 14, 1921 in Springfield, Il to Andrew and Anna (Soderstom) Johnson. Helen graduated from Lamphier High School in 1940. She married Grover Walkup in Norfolk, Virginia on February 2 , 1943. He preceded her in death after 66 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Esther Kublick.

Helen is survived by her two sons; Jim (Phyllis) Walkup of Mapleton, IL and Grover (Maria) Walkup of Italy, three grandchildren; Patricia Walkup of Italy, Andy (Dawn) Walkup on Fenton, MO, and Stacey (Jeff) Spiller of Peoria, IL and her 5 great-grandchildren; Hadley, Nick, Trey, Danielle, and Alexandria.

After raising her two boys, Helen decided to join the work force and became a career clerk for the U.S. postal service. After many years of service, she retired in 1987. While in retirement, Helen became an avid golfer and also participated in many bowling leagues around the area. She was a resident at Lutheran Hillside Village for 7 years and enjoyed taking part in some of the many community activities, such as playing cards with her friends and line dancing. Helen will be greatly missed by all of her friends and family.

Services for Helen will be on Wednesday July 22, 2015 at 10:30 am at the Lutheran Hillside Village Waters of Life Chapel, with a visitation an hour prior. Pastor Pat Monroe will officiate. Burial will be later that day at Irish Grove Cemetery in Middletown, IL.
