Robert L. "Doc" Nelson

He was born September 4, 1937 in Peoria to Leonard G. and Bertha M. (Smith) Nelson. He was previously married to Kathy Jackson and Opal Amburgy. He married Patricia L. Rohman on August 31, 1995 in Uncertain, TX. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons Ricky A. Nelson of Princeville, IL, Bradley D. Nelson of Miami, FL, Gregory R. (fiancé’ Crys Reynolds) Nelson of Pekin, IL; two step daughters Heather J. (Cody) Deweese and Amber T. (C.J.) Johnson both of East Peoria; a half brother Gerald R. Nelson of Canton, a half sister Bernadine Sipp of Eden, IL; three granddaughters Sydney A. Nelson, McKenna F. Nelson, and Talia G. Nelson; two brothers-in-law, Tim (Iline) Rohman of Hanna City, Steve (Debbie) Rohman of Peoria; one sister-in-law Terry (Joe) Hedl of Marshall, TX, and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Robert served on the Peoria Police Department for 20 years from 1971 until he retired in 1991. He received the master shooter award and he was part of the Peoria Police Tactical Unit from 1974 to 1977 and again from 1989 to 1991. He was awarded the Peoria Police Department Bernard J. Kennedy officer of the year award in 1979.

He was a Wyoming High School graduate. He was a member of the Peoria Police Benevolent Association and the NRA. He enjoyed target shooting and was an avid motorcycle rider who enjoyed reconditioning and upgrading his motorcycles.

Robert was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He touched many lives and was loved by everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed.

Funeral services will be held at 7 P.M., Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Davison-Fulton Bartonville Chapel. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 P.M., Thursday at the chapel prior to services. Cremation will be accorded.
