Adeline Rosemary Sunday Allen, age 96, formerly of Stanleytown, VA., passed away July 8, 2017 in Dobson, N.C. She was born January 4, 1921, in Carlisle, West Virginia, to the late Thomas and Celia Chavet Sunday. She was preceded in death by her husband, Colonel Robert S. Allen. Adeline was a remarkable human being. She was an avid animal lover, having owned a Yorkshire terrier named Mr. Cuddles. Her love for her job was evident. Working at the Pentagon, she met her husband, Colonel Robert S. Allen, where she would become his personal secretary. Her job responsibilities were immense. While working in the National Press Building in Washington, D.C., she assisted her husband in writing several books and also assisted him with his syndicated newspaper columns. She attended the First Baptist Church in D.C., where she was a soloist and Chorus member for over 35 years. She sang for the former President Jimmy Carter. After her retirement for the D.C. area, she settled to a beautiful area in Stanleytown, VA., where she has been for the past 30 years. Her love and devotion to her mother, Celia Sunday and her sister, Lucy Sunday, was a testament of the kind of women that Adeline was. Surviving is her sister, Yvonne (Richard) Gaines of Maitland, FL.; one niece, Kristi Lynn (Michael) Gaines Hlavek of Winter Park, FL., one nephew, Richard Lee Gaines of Knoxville, TN.; 2 great nieces, Reagan Hlavek and Delaney Hlavek; 1 great nephew, Hudson Gaines Hlavek. Family will receive friends Friday 6 pm to 8 pm at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, 30 Riverside Drive, Bassett, VA., 24055 Funeral services will be Saturday 10 am at the funeral home with Doctor J.D. Harmon, officiating. Entombment to follow in Henry Memorial Park.
