Cynthia Clark Jacobsen Wood, age 83, of Glade Hill, Virginia passed away on Friday, March 8, 2024. Born on February 2, 1941, in Fort Collins, Colorado, the only child of Byron "Barney" Martin Jacobsen and Hazel Beatrice Clark Jacobsen, Cynthia was raised on the family dairy farm, which had been homesteaded by her paternal grandparents in 1908.
She graduated from Ault High School in 1959, and went on to earn her degree in English from Colorado State University in 1964. She received her Masters of Arts from George Mason University in 1988. She was a 4th generation teacher, teaching English and history in her storied career. During her marriage to high school sweetheart Jim, they traveled extensively. With daughter LeAnne and son Martin, they lived in Virginia, Switzerland, Laos, and Japan. Ultimately Jim and Cindy landed in Smith Mountain Lake, where they spent their golden years of retirement.
Cindy's life was one of learning, teaching, compassion, and passions. What she touched grew and thrived. She impacted thousands of high school students, sending productive young adults out into the world, some of them continuing her legacy of teaching. She grew gardens with innumerable tomatoes and cucumbers and peppers and marigolds, and much, much more, producing beauty and joy, and, of course, pickles to the delight of so many. She read and wrote and scrapbooked and played canasta and mahjong and did yoga with an enthusiasm second to none.
Cindy is survived by her loving husband Jim, daughter LeAnne and son-in-law Tom Beardsley, and devoted granddaughters Jessica and Anna. A special thank you goes to Good Samaritan Hospice for the excellent care that they provided for the entire family.
