Elwood Norman Stone “For we live by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7) Elwood N. Stone, age 89, of Bassett, Virginia passed away at his home on Friday, August 20, 2021. Elwood was born on June 12, 1932 to the late Albert Bernard Stone and the late Sallie Bet Bryant Stone. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jacqueline Osborne Stone and his daughter, Kimberly Stone Glass (Robert) of Ruckersville, Virginia. He is also survived by his sister Peggy Stone Jordan (the late Frank) of Greenville, South Carolina. Elwood has three grandchildren: Matthew Helms of Richmond, Virginia; Ashton Bratton (Drew) of Roanoke, Virginia; and Sarah Helms-Smith of Ruckersville, Virginia. He has four great-grandchildren: Kyle Bratton, Chase Bratton, Alaina Bratton, and Amara Salavaggione. Two sisters-in-law, Patsy Osborne and Nancy Martin. Nieces: Sandra Greeson (Tim); Carol Ellis (Brian); Michelle Campbell (the late Scott); Jane Ramsey (Spencer). Nephews: Harold Martin (Leila); Randy Martin; Lee Martin (Amy). Elwood also has many great nephews, great nieces, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents Sallie Bet and Albert Stone, his sister Betty Carol Martin. (Harold). Brother- in-laws, Billy Osborne, Frank Jordan, Harold Martin and Bobby Martin. Elwood loved God, Family, Church, and Community. Elwood was best known for his gift of gab and his warm personality. He never met a stranger and knew Henry County residents and their family’s history. Elwood was a life-time member of Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church, where he served as deacon. Elwood loved his church family, church activities, visiting the sick, and the shut-ins. Many times, he committed acts of kindness and compassion without anyone’s knowledge. He was a true servant of God. Elwood was a family man and especially loved the holidays so that everyone could be together. Elwood believed in education and always made sure that his daughter had the best educational opportunities. Elwood remained active in the community throughout his life. He attended Bassett High School. He was volunteer fire-fighter for the Bassett Volunteer Fire\Company and once was the fire chief. He was a member and former Grand Chancelor, of the Knights of the Pythians, Patrick Henry lodge 82; a charter member as well as last member of the Dick Bell Masonic Lodge; and a Jaycee. He sponsored a bowling team, and a race car. He was elected magistrate for Martinsville and Henry County for 17 years. His lifelong career was in sales for Nathan’s Department Store, J.C. Penney, and Sears. His dream was realized when he opened his very own clothing store, Lwood’s, with two locations. One might say he was the best dressed man in Henry County. Elwood loved Myrtle Beach and had a home there. He was blessed with great South Carolina neighbors, with whom he continued to maintain friendships until the end of his life. Services will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church in Bassett. Virginia: Visitation at the church from 10:30-11:30 am, immediately followed by the service. A celebration of life will begin after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Benevolent Fund for Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church in memory of Elwood Stone. Elwood’s family would like to thank the Bassett community and the Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church family for the extended acts of love and kindness during his final years. During this time, Elwood became blind. He truly learned how to walk by faith not sight.
