Mary Newman Maxey

Mary Newman Maxey, 94, of Bassett, passed away Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Fork Mountain Rest Home in Franklin County. She was born in Stoneville, NC, September 23, 1921 to Eddie Newman and Nannie Lou Mabe Newman.

Mary and her husband were owners and operators of South Bassett Café for many years. She was a member of Bassett Memorial United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis H. Maxey; one son, Dennis H. (Danny) Maxey, Jr.; five sisters, Thelma Eanes, Allie Swain, Margaret Spraker, Gladys Hellriegel and Mamie Dentino; six brothers, Coy, Joe, Curtis, Woodrow, Albert and Russell.

She is survived by one sister, Minnie Bowlin and husband Buck, two brothers, Otis and Dewey Newman, all of Bassett; one granddaughter, Reba Maxey Hancock and husband, Allen of Rocky Mount; two great-Grandsons, Caleb McNeil and Colby Hancock.

The family will receive friends Sunday, April 3, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home in Bassett.

The funeral service will be held Monday, April 4, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home with the Rev. Russ Gresham officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.
