Mattie Ayers Smith Mattie Ayers Smith, 97, of 100 Homewood Drive, Bassett, died Saturday August 28. 2010 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville-Henry County. She was born in Glade Hill on March 16, 1913 to the late Cyrus E. Ayers and Blanche Bousman Ayers. She was retired from Bassett Walker Knitting where she worked in the sewing department She was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, John Russell Smith; daughter-in-law, Lisa Smith; two sisters, Lottie Ayers and Nannie Ayers Hubbard; two brothers, Henry and George Ayers; two step-grandchildren, Linda and Danny Hamill. Surviving are her daughter and special son-in-law, Carolyn S. and Bill Forbes of Bassett; one son, John Wayne Smith of Albuquerque, New Mexico; one brother, James C. “Jim” Ayers of Union Hall; sister-in-law, Virginia Smith; three grandchildren, Lee Forbes and his wife, Renae, Johnny and Jason Forbes; three step-grandchildren, Tessie and Tony Hamill and Tara Kilby; three great-grandchildren, Rusty, Amber and Gage Forbes; three step-great-grandchildren, Gary, John and Feliz Santallanes; a special niece and care giver, Nancy Hubbard, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 1, 2010 in the Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, Bassett Chapel with Reverend Ben Sturgis and Reverend Bell Robertson officiating. Burial will be in the Ayers Family Cemetery in Glade Hill. The family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at Collins-McKee-Stone, Bassett Chapel and other times at the home of the daughter at 118 Homewood Drive, Bassett.
